Pop star Justin Bieber’s documentary Never Say Never pulled in $12.4 million Friday, leading the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy Just Go With It, which took in $9.7 million. However concert films tend to drop off after the beginning of the weekend, so observers are waiting on a final tally.
Never Say Never, produced by MTV Films and Paramount Insurge, follows Bieber on his 2010 My World Tour, framed against home video footage of Bieber as a young child. The film was distributed through 3,105 theaters, compared to 3,548 theaters hosting Just Go With It.
Just Go With It remakes the 1969 Walter Matthau comedy Cactus Flower, based on a French stage play. It tells the story of a single plastic surgeon (Sandler) who pretends to be unhappily married to his office manager (Aniston) in a misguided attempt to win over the girl of his dreams, played by Brooklyn Decker.
Both films are expected to top $30 million by the end of the weekend.
Trailing both films was Disney’s animated family film Gnomeo & Juliet, which opened to an estimated $6.1 million and is expected to achieve $20 million for the weekend.
Coming in fourth was Focus Features’ Channing Tatum Roman epic The Eagle, which opened to an estimated $2.8 million.
Rounding out the top five was Screen Gems holdover The Roommate, which grossed $2.6 million on its second Friday, bringing its total take so far to $20.3 million.
