Recruiters reject Rogers as physically unfit because he is too skinny, but he refuses to give up. His determined courage wins the attention of government officials screening applicants to be the test specimen for a top-secret supersoldier program. Rogers enters the program’s lab a skinny kid, and walks out as a perfect physical specimen. He receives the codename Captain America, a patriotic uniform, a bulletproof shield that doubles as a boomerang, and his assignment: to lead a team of supersoldiers to kill Adolph Hitler.

To get to Hitler, Rogers must go through Hitler’s personally-trained henchman, a supervillain with a hideously deformed face, named the Red Skull. The new trailer shows a brief glimpse of the Red Skull, who is destined to become Captain America’s archenemy.

The trailer also offers a preview of Captain America’s shield. The shield is shown during its first test against live ammunition and during combat action behind enemy lines.

Captain America is a superhero character who has been published since March 1941 by Marvel Comics, now owned by Disney. Captain America comics sold successfully during World War II, but declined in popularity after the war. A brief attempt to revive the character during the Korean War was unsuccessful.

Then in the 1960s, after Marvel had introduced the Fantastic Four and the Avengers superhero teams, Captain America was revived as a member of the Avengers. The Avengers is a superhero team that includes the Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor, all recent subjects of movie adaptations. The new movie will follow the release of a Thor movie on May 6, 2011, and is intended to pave the way for the release of an Avengers movie in 2012.

Captain America was first adapted to film as a serial movie by Republic Pictures in 1944. A CBS TV movie adaptation in 1979 and a low-budget big screen adaptation in 1990 failed commercially. Several cartoon adaptations have been done since the 1960s. Captain America currently appears on TV on a Disney cartoon adaptation of the Avengers.

Captain America: The First Avenger is produced by Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige, who worked on most of Marvel’s recent movie adaptations, including the X-Men, Spider-Man, and Iron Man series. The film is distributed by Paramount.

Directing is Joe Johnston, an Oscar-winning former effects artist who previously worked on the Star Wars series, the Indiana Jones series, and Jurassic Park III.

The screenplay is written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who previously worked together on the Narnia series; and Joss Whedon, whose resume includes work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and several comic books, including Marvel’s X-Men series.

Captain America stars Chris Evans, who played the Human Torch in The Fantastic Four. Tommy Lee Jones plays Colonel Chester Phillips, who recruits Steve Rogers. Sebastian Stan of Gossip Girl plays Captain America’s sidekick Bucky Barnes. The Red Skull is played by Hugo Weaving, famed for his roles as Agent Smith from the Matrix series and Elrond in The Lord of the Rings. Robert Downey, Jr. is expected to make a cameo in his role as Iron Man, foreshadowing the joint appearance of Iron Man and Captain America in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers movie.

Captain America: The First Avenger is due in theaters July 22, 2011.
