Google Latitude Expands Check-in Feature for Local Discounts

Google Latitude, Google’s location-sharing mobile device app, expanded its Check-in local discount offer feature nationwide on Thursday. The new feature allows users to unlock discounts by checking in to locations of select partners hosting Latitude deals.

The Check-in feature uses Google’s “status” system to extend discount offer eligibility to users. Offers can only be unlocked by users with statuses such as Regular, VIP, and Guru. These titles are acquired by checking into a specific place multiple times, which promotes repeat business for participating partners.

Partners can customize titles. For instance, Quiznos customers who buy a sub can get a free sub of up to equal value and earn the title “Champion of Taste.”

Google Latitude Check-in partners currently include:

  • American Eagle Outfitters
  • Arby’s
  • Cellairis
  • Famous Footwear
  • Finish Line
  • Great Clips
  • Macy’s
  • Naturalizer
  • PostNet
  • Quiznos
  • RadioShack
  • Tasti D-Lite
  • Wireless Zone

The new Google Latitude Check-in offers are currently available for Google Maps for Android, which includes Latitude, and for Latitude for iPhone. However, the iPhone’s iOS app only added Check-in two weeks ago, and hasn’t yet added status level achievements.

Google Latitude’s Check-in feature resembles Google’s continued pursuit of expansion into the group coupon market space. Check-in positions Google to compete with group coupon features offered by Groupon, Foursquare, and Facebook.
