London Fashion Week February 2011 kicked off this weekend at Somerset House. International buyers and press assembled for one of the world’s biggest fashion shows to get a preview of spring and summer trends.
London Fashion Week is held in London every February and September. It is organized by the British Fashion Council (BFC) trade association for the government’s London Development Agency, with support from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. London Fashion Week is one of the “Big Four” fashion weeks, along with New York Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week.
This February’s London Fashion Week showcases British fashion to an estimated international audience of over 5,000. The audience includes a record number of American buyers, along with representatives from France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, China, and Japan. Top editors from major fashion magazines around the world are covering the event. The international presence is supported by the BFC‘s Guest Programme, started in 2002 to boost the British fashion industry. The British fashion industry generates 21 billion pounds ($34 billion) annually and supports 1.31 million jobs.
Standouts as the fashion show opened this weekend included Alexa Chung in a camel coat with a checked grey scarf and strappy high heels, Kimberley Walsh in a printed dress, and Olivia Palermo in a yellow dress and black jacket with cheetah-print heels.
According to the fashion press, the key trends for spring and summer this year are pleats, leather, feathers, prints, and frilly shorts.
London Fashion Week February 2011 runs from Friday February 18 through Wednesday February 23. For a schedule of events, see http://www.londonfashionweek.co.uk/catwalkschedule….
