Michael Rosenbaum Will Return for Smallville Series FinaleFeb 13th, 2011 | By Roy Rasmussen | Category: Art and Entertainment
Michael Rosenbaum has finally confirmed that he will return as Lex Luthor for the Smallville series finale on May 13, ending anxious cast concerns and fan speculation, reported TVLine in an exclusive scoop Friday.
“I’m delighted to return for the series finale,” Rosenbaum told TVLine. “I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is. I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness, and even their threats. Ha ha.”
Rosenbaum won a Saturn Award for his acclaimed portrayal of Superman’s nemesis from 2001 to 2008, upstaging the previous performance of Gene Hackman. He also directed one episode. He left the role partly because he felt he had exhausted the character’s development within the bounds of the current plotline. The series finale is expected to take the plot and character a step further by portraying Luthor as the catalyst for Clark Kent’s final decision to become Superman.
Rosenbaum joins the long list of actors who have agreed to return to say farewell to Smallville as it ends in its genre-record 10th season. Others agreeing to an encore have included John Schneider, Annette O’Toole, Laura Vandervoort, John Glover, and Callum Blue.
The producers and crew are relieved and excited. Star Tom Welling had asked, “With Clark propelled into being Superman, how do you do it without a Lex Luthor? That just doesn’t make sense to me.” Fans have agreed, and are expressing enthusiasm that Rosenbaum will be back.
Rosenbaum is an accomplished voice actor, and has lent his talent to numerous Superman-related cartoons, most famously playing Flash on Justice League. He has also appeared in numerous films, including Urban Legend and Sorority Boys.
As Smallville ends, Rosenbaum will be starting a recurring role on the new FOX comedy Breaking In, which premieres April 6. The show, from Adam Sandler’s production company, stars Christian Slater in an office comedy about a computer security firm, in the spirit of The Office. Rosenbaum plays Dutch, an antagonistic foil to the geeks in the office. Rosenbaum’s character is dating a character played by Odette Yustman, a female hacker who is romantically pursued by a male hacker played by Bret Harrison.
