Pink Floyd, Doors Manzarek-Krieger, B.B. King Play OC FairApr 19th, 2011 | By Roy Rasmussen | Category: Art and Entertainment
Today the Orange County Fair (OC Fair) announced a legendary lineup for its Summer Concert Series at the Pacific Amphitheatre during the 2011 OC Fair in Costa Mesa. On Sunday, July 17, the Pink Floyd Experience will perform the band’s classic album Animals, along with other hits. On Friday, August 5, former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger will team up with Jim Morrison imitator Dave Brock to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s last album, L.A. Woman. On Sunday, August 14, blues legend B.B. King will close the fair with his classic hits.
Pink Floyd released Animals in 1977 as a concept album based on George Orwell’s dystopian fable Animal Farm. Its dark vision of human brutality and social corruption foreshadowed themes the band would later develop in The Wall. The album reached number two in the UK charts and number three in the US. Accumulated sales over the years eventually topped quadruple platinum. Since then the band has gone through numerous incarnations. Founding keyboardist Richard Wright died in 2008. Since then vocalist and bassist Roger Waters and guitarist and vocalist Dave Gilmour have begun appearing together again, and the band has signed a five-year deal with EMI. Drummer Nick Mason recently made headlines as well, raising funds to fight teenage cancer, advising IGA Automobile LP about a fund to purchase $150 million of classic car, and testing a new Ferrari FF.
L.A. Woman was the last album the Doors released before singer Jim Morrison’s death of heroin overdose in 1971. The album developed themes from Morrison’s poems, personifying the city of Los Angeles as a woman symbolizing the dramatic tensions in the American psyche. In 2002 Manzarek and Krieger formed a Doors spinoff called the Doors of the 21st Century. Following a legal dispute with drummer John Densmore, they changed the name of the band to Manzarek-Krieger. Brock, who has been doing a Morrison tribute act called Wild Child for 20 years, joins Manzarek and Krieger to recreate the look and feel of the original band, minus Densmore.
B.B. King, ranked the third greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone, has been playing the blues since 1937. After gaining fame on the r&b circuit in the 1950s, he began playing to rock fans in the 1960s, opening for the Rolling Stones’ 1969 tour of the United States, and later teaming with U2 and Eric Clapton. He played his farewell tour in 2006, but the music keeps calling him back, and he continues to add to his over 15,000 performances. Last year he contributed to Cyndi Lauper’s album Memphis Blues, nominated for a Grammy.
The Orange County Fair began as a small community livestock exhibition featuring horse races in 1890. It has grown since then to an annual 23-day festival attended by over 1 million visitors, making it the ninth-largest fair in the United States. The OC Fair features food, sports, live entertainment, and the Summer Concert Series at the Pacific Amphitheatre.
