Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Talk Spurred by New TrailerApr 6th, 2011 | By Roy Rasmussen | Category: Art and Entertainment
As Disney released a new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides this week, producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed to USA Today that the script for the fifth movie in the series is already in development. The new movies will feature standalone plots focused on Johnny Depp’s character Captain Jack Sparrow.
The first three movies in the series, based on a Disney theme park ride, composed a trilogy, with the plot wrapping up in the third movie. Future movies will go beyond the original storyline into independent adventures.
In the latest movie, a mysterious woman named Angelica (Penelope Cruz) resurfaces from Captain Jack’s past. He’s not sure whether she’s interested in romance or just using him to find the Fountain of Youth. Their adventure takes a new twist when he learns that she’s the daughter of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).
The plot draws inspiration from Tim Powers’ 1987 historical fantasy novel On Stranger Tides, which along with the Disney ride helped inspire the original Pirates of the Caribbean concept. The screenplay is written by veteran screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who have previously worked together on such films as Aladdin, Shrek, and other movies in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
This will be the first movie in the series directed by Rob Marshall, noted for his award-winning choreography for stage musicals such as Annie and the movie Chicago. It will also be the first film in the series shot in digital 3D. Disney is distributing the film.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is due in theaters May 20, 2011.
