Weird Al Lady Gaga Born This Way Parody Dispute SettledApr 23rd, 2011 | By Roy Rasmussen | Category: Art and Entertainment
Weird Al Yankovic has settled a dispute with Lady Gaga’s manager and will be releasing his new album Apocalpyse complete with “Perform This Way,” a parody Gaga’s “Born This Way.” Earlier this week on Tuesday, Al had announced that a rejection from Gaga’s manager was holding up commercial release of the song, along with a planned album cover and video. But after Al released a non-commercial version of the song on YouTube, distributing it free and encouraging fans to donate to charity, public support from over 1.6 million YouTube viewers plus Al’s 2 million Twitter followers generated an outcry that reversed Gaga’s decision.
Annoyed fans were quick to point out that “Born This Way” was itself derivative of Madonna. “You should ask Madonna for permission, since the song is a rip of ‘Express Youself’,” one fan posted on Al’s blog. Another fan posted their own video version of Al’s song, juxtaposing pictures of Madonna and Lady Gaga at a point in the song where the lyrics say, “I’m so completely original.”
By Wednesday, the fan outcry had reportedly reached Lady Gaga’s ears. Her representatives announced that she had not actually had input into the rejection, and after actually hearing the song she liked it and approved it.
Commenting on the incident, Weird Al laughed and said, “You know what? I’m going to let people draw their own conclusions.” He added, “Thank you, Gaga. And thanks to everybody who had my back.”
Apocalypse is due out June 21, 2011.
